Similar to thyroid hormones, the calcineurin/NFAT pathway regulates bone mass via its actions in osteoblasts and by indirect effects on osteoclast function. Calcineurin is a calcium- and calmodulin-activated phosphatase that dephosphorylates the transcription factor NFAT enabling its translocation to the nucleus.
